A new internal task force at the Food and Drug Administration is seeking suggestions from employees, stakeholders and the public about how the agency can become more transparent, officials said Tuesday. One topic of debate has been how the agency can balance Air Jordan shoes melo 1.5manufacturers' proprietary concerns with the public's desire to know about clinical trial results for drugs not yet approved. FOOD SAFETY: FDA failing to meet inspection audit goals U.S. REP.: New FDA looks much like old model Some critics have viewed the FDA as "a black box that makes important decisions without explaining them," Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said at a news conference. "The agency can and should communicate with the public in a way that provides more clarity about the agency and its processes, not less." The FDA might have a good explanation for a particular decision,Air Max 93 "but you don't often hear that explanation very clearly," said Principal Deputy Commissioner Joshua Sharfstein, chair of the new task force. In the Federal Registry notice about the meeting, the FDA listed questions that it is specifically interested in pursuing, including: •How can the agency better explain what it does? •What should the FDA reveal about enforcement actions, product approvals and recalls? •What tools should the agency use to provide more usefulEsse cigarettes information? •What, if any, legislative or regulatory changes are needed to make the FDA more transparent? •What information should remain confidential? Frequent FDA critic Sidney Wolfe, acting president of Public Citizen and director of the Health Research Group, says the move toward more transparency is a long time coming: Back in 1977, Air Jordan2.5Norman Dorsen, a New York University constitutional law professor, questioned the FDA's longstanding practice of keeping data from premarket clinical trials confidential. Dorsen recommended that Congress amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to say that safety and effectiveness data aren't trade secrets that must be kept confidential, Wolfe says.

Apple changes mind on rejected e-book reader app

Apple has had a change of heart and decided to allow an iPhone app that offered access to the Kama Sutra. Apple on Thursday notified the developer that it had rejected the e-book reader app because it deemed the content available on Eucalyptus as "objectionable." As it does with all books nike shox r3available through the app, Eucalyptus downloads a text-only version of the ancient Indian book on sexuality from Project Gutenberg The Kama Sutra does not come installed on the app; as with any book title, users must search for the book and download it. The baffling thing in this case is that the book is available on the iPhone using other e-book readers available on the App Store. Then early Sunday, Apple changed its position and accepted the app after discussions with Eucalyptus developer James Montgomerie, the developer wrote on his blog: Earlier today I received a phone call from an Apple representative. He was very complimentary about Eucalyptus. We talked about the confusion surrounding its App Store rejections, which I am happy to say is now fully resolved. He invited me to re -build and submit a version of Eucalyptus with no filters for Nike Jordanimmediate approval, and that full version is now available on the iPhone App Store. When the App Store was announced in March 2008, Apple said it would vet every single application submitted to the App Store and approve or reject applications based on its internal standards. However, Apple has a mixed record on apps that win approval. Last month, the App Store approved an application called Baby Shaker, the object of which was to stop the incessant crying of an infant pictured on screen by violently shaking the iPhone, at which point two red "x" marks appear over the baby's eyes. After a wave of protest, Apple removed the app. In March, Apple reversed itself and accepted a popular Twitter jordan shoes 5app for iPhone and iPod Touch that gives users access to the Twitter Trends section, which displays the most frequent topics or words on Twitter at any given moment--including swear words. In the past, the company has also banned a book from the App Store for using dirty language, yet approved a fast-growing category of fart-related applications, leaving many to wonder exactly what sort of standards are used to evaluate iPhone applications.

Battle begins to establish UN Sri Lankan war crimes investigation

Western nations face an uphill battle to establish any investigation of war crimes in Sri Lanka. The UN Human Rights Council has agreed to hold a special session in Geneva next week on alleged war crimes by Tamil rebels and Sri Lankan government forces, but European diplomats are struggling to muster Esse cigarettessupport for a strong statement at the end of the meeting. European Union nations have so far secured the backing of only 17 countries on the 47-member council for a text calling for investigations of atrocities. The seven EU countries on the council — Britain, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovakia and Slovenia — are joined by Argentina, Bosnia, Canada, Chile, Mexico, Mauritius, South Korea, Switzerland, Ukraine and Uruguay. Efforts to attract further support will intensify in the coming days. Sri Lanka is lobbying hard among allies in the Non-Aligned Movement, including Cuba. The 17 nations have agreed to condemn attacks on civiliansAir Jordan shoes 8 and the alleged use of “human shields” by the Tamil Tiger rebels. They also want the Human Rights Council to voice concern about alleged violations of humanitarian law by the Government and to call for an investigation “in accordance with international standards”. Although negotiations continue, it is unlikely that the council will establish its own investigation as it did for the recent Gaza war. European diplomats emphasise, however, that the special session will help to give a public airing to alleged human rights abuses in Sri Lanka. The United States, which was elected to the Human Rights Council last week after ending its boycott of the body, does not become a voting member until next month, but is expected to speak. Ban Ki Moon, the UN Secretary-General, who is making a 24-hour jordan shoes 3trip to Sri Lanka this weekend, has called for an investigation of alleged abuses — echoing a call by the UN Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay. “In my talks with President Rajapaksa in the past, over the last two months, we have made a very strong case to avoid civilian casualties and to not use heavy weaponry against the civilian population during their military operations,” he said on Tuesday. “Wherever serious and credible allegations are made of grave and persistent violations of international humanitarian laws, these should be properly investigated . . . I hope these allegations are handled through appropriate procedures,” he added. Sri Lanka is not a member of the International Criminal Court and could only be subjected to its jurisdiction by a vote in the UN Security Council, where China and Russia both hold veto power.

New flu strain spreads to Turkey and India

By Ayla Jean Yackley ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkey and India confirmed their first cases of H1N1 flu on Saturday, all involving air passengers arriving from the United States. Thirty-eight countries have now confirmed cases of the new flu strain, a mix of swine, human and avian viruses, which last month prompted the World Heath Organization to raise its Jordan XI sneskerglobal pandemic alert level to 5 on a 6- point scale. The western Japanese city of Kobe said it would close some public schools for a week after eight people were confirmed as being infected with the new H1N1 influenza, commonly known as swine flu. Three of the eight were teenage students from the same school -- the first confirmed cases in Japan involving people who had not been overseas. The other five were from another school, Kyodo news agency said. The WHO, whose data lags national tallies, had earlier put the number of confirmed worldwide cases at 8,451, with 72 deaths. The vast majority of deaths -- 66 -- have been in Mexico, where the outbreak started. The United States has reported four, and Canada and Costa Rica one each. FAMILY QUARANTINE Turkey identified its first two cases in a married couple traveling to Iraq from the United States, health officials and local media said. A 26-year-old American man, traveling via Amsterdam, was foundJordan X sneaker to be suffering from the virus after arriving at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport en route to Iraq on Friday, Turkish Health Minister Recep Akdag said. Thermal cameras at the airport detected that he had a high fever. Authorities later determined the man's wife was also infected, the NTV television channel said. The pair were quarantined along with other family members and were under observation at a Turkish research hospital, where they were being given anti-viral medication, Akdag said. The Iraqi-American family was traveling on a KLM aircraft to Istanbul that was carrying 163 passengers, most of whom are now being monitored for signs of the flu, said Akdag. "We know of the existence of a few (passengers) whom we've been Jordan IX sneakerunable to contact," Akdag said. "They need to be alert so that they can be given preventative medicine and in order to protect others." "Everything is under control," Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan told reporters. "Everything is being monitored closely." India's health ministry on Saturday confirmed its first case of the H1N1 flu, in an Indian man who had traveled from the United States, via Dubai, to the southern city of Hyderabad.

Source: Obama considers more than 6 for high court

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is considering a list of more than six contenders for the Supreme Court that is dominated by women and Hispanics, one that includes judges and leaders from own his administration who have never donned a judicial robe. Among those under consideration are Solicitor General Elena Kagan, Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and U.S. Appeals Court judges Sonia Salem cigarettesSotomayor and Diane Pamela Wood. California Supreme Court Justice Carlos Moreno is also under review by Obama. Sources familiar with Obama's deliberations confirmed the names to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no candidates have been revealed by the White House. The confirmation amounts to the first time any name has been directly tied to Obama. One official cautioned that Obama is considering other people who have not been publicly mentioned. And more names may be added as the administration considers a replacement for retiring Justice David Souter. The disclosure came as the president met privately at the White House with four leading senators likely to play a key role in confirmation proceedings. Separately, top aides invited the leaders of several liberal-leaning outside groups to a meeting. Most of the people confirmed as under consideration have been cheap cigarettesmentioned frequently as potential candidates. Moreno — the sole man on the known group of candidates — is the newest name to emerge. The president is widely expected to choose a woman for a Supreme Court that has nine members but only one female justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg. He is also under pressure from some Latino officials to name the nation's first Hispanic justice. Moreno and Sotomayor are Hispanic. Obama is likely before month's end to name a nominee to replace Souter, who is retiring when the court term ends this summer. He is part of the court's liberal wing, and his replacement by the new Democratic president is not expected to change the high court's ideological balance. Obama met Wednesday with senators who will have huge influence over the pace and tone of the confirmation process. "I don't envy him the decision, but I think he's going to makeair jordan XIX it soon," Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., said after the private White House session. Obama met with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.; Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, the top Republican on Judiciary; Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell; and Leahy. Vice President Joe Biden, a former Judiciary Committee chairman and veteran of confirmation hearings, also attended. The Republican senators underscored that they would not seek a rushed confirmation process, noting that it typically takes 60 days for confirmation once a nominee has been announced. Pressed on a timetable, Leahy told reporters: "We'll work out a decent schedule. Let's get the nominee first." Obama wants his nominee confirmed before the Senate recess in August, which means he would need to name one soon. "I think he's still in the initial evaluation process," Sessions told reporters later in the day. "That's pretty clear, I think. He's not settled on one name." The senators who met with Obama said he did not discuss specific names with them. Moreno was nominated by President Bill Clinton in 1998 to serve as a U.S. District Court judge and the Senate unanimously confirmed him. In 2001 he raised a few eyebrows when he gavenike jordan melo 1.5 up his lifetime federal judgeship to accept Democratic Gov. Gray Davis' nomination to the state's high court. Moreno is the only Democrat on the California Supreme Court and is widely regarded as its most liberal voice. Last year he signed on to the court's 4-3 ruling that legalized gay marriage in the state. Voters later banned gay marriage in a ballot initiative. The other known candidates under Obama's review: _Granholm, a former federal prosecutor and Michigan attorney general. She has been a fierce spokeswoman for her state's struggling auto industry and was a strong advocate for Obama during his presidential campaign. _Napolitano, who stepped down as Arizona's governor to join the administration and was quickly tested as homeland security chief when the swine flu outbreak hit. _Wood, an appeals court judge who has worked at the State Department, the Justice Department and in private practice. Like Obama, she is a former professor at the University of Chicago. _Kagan, who stepped down as dean of Harvard Law School to become the nation's first female solicitor general. Like Obama, she is a graduate of Harvard who later taught of the University ofRussian Style cigarettes Chicago law school. She clerked for Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and worked in the Clinton White House. _Sotomayor, an appeals court judge and former New York prosecutor and private lawyer. President George H.W. Bush nominated her as a federal judge; Clinton nominated her to the appeals court. 'Star Trek': What did YOU think?

So, I'm assuming you've seen it by now, right? Otherwise, what kind of geek would you be? (The kind of geek that gets their credentials revoked.) J.J. Abrams' reboot is well on its way to making a cargo hold full of cash in its opening weekend, and it has been leaving critics giddy with praise -- includingNike Men Air Force 1 High our own Owen Gleiberman, who gave Star Trek an A-. I'm gonna give some SPOILER-LADEN thoughts of my own after the jump. Me, I thought it was good. Very good, even. But not great. For me, it was missing a real sense of jeopardy -- the feeling that, just maybe, not everyone would've made it out alive. But you sort of knew that the Enterprise's bridge crew would survive their maiden voyage intact, so you never thought that Kirk or Spock or even Sulu was in any real danger. (Though we did get a handy red-shirt to take one for the team.) In that regard, I'm really surprised that Capt. Pike survived: He seemed ready-made for the mentor-who-dies-so-the-hero-can-move-oncheap cigarettes role (see: Obi-Wan Kenobi). But if the filmmakers had any huevos, they'd have killed off Old Spock. Why have two Spocks roaming around the cosmos, when the elder's death would've added such a sense of loss, of permanence? After all, Spock died in the best Trek movie ever...you don't mess with what works. But it was not Starfleet Babies. And for that, I'm eternally grateful. What did you think? Over the moon, pleased as punch, or aghast at the heretical liberties taken?

Calif. wildfire imperils Santa Barbara; Homes lost

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) — Paradise is not lost, but it's in flames — again. The seasonal wildfires that menace this idyllic coastal city roared to life earlier than usual but with all-too-familiar ferocity, burning mansions to their foundations and forcing more than 13,000 to flee. Dozens of homes were destroyed, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said. "I knew it was time to leave," said Tom Morse, 62, a day after he dusted off his motorhome as the fire neared his Mission Canyon Heights house. "I could see the flames getting close." The fire was just the latest to ravage the area known as West cigarettesthe American Riviera, home to screen stars, former presidents and Oprah Winfrey. The blaze reached the burn area of another wildfire that just six months ago destroyed about 200 homes in Santa Barbara and Montecito. The latest 1,300-acre fire remained out of control and firefighters were on alert for a predicted return of a "sundowner" — fierce winds that sweep down late in the day from the Santa Ynez Mountains towering close behind Santa Barbara. A sundowner on Wednesday afternoon turned a slumbering brush fire on rugged slopes above the city into a towering wildfire that hurled flames into homes and spit embers into more distant neighborhoods. Some 5,400 homes were evacuated, and another 13,000 people were advised to be ready to leave. "It started firestorming dramatically," said Gregg Patronyk, a lifelong Santa Barbara resident who grabbed a hose and started wetting his roof when he saw other houses ablaze. "The fire got within 200 to 300 feet of my house. "There was a lot of pressure to leave," he said. "Police wanted me out and I got a frantic call from my sister, who was walking up the hill to get me. So I packed up the car and left,Winston cigarettes picking her up on the way." Nearly 1,400 firefighters from many departments were on the lines, aided by aircraft. Authorities reported 10 firefighters injured, including three who sheltered in a house during a firestorm. They were in good condition at a Los Angeles burn center but two faced surgery. Other injuries ranged from smoke inhalation to ankle sprains. There were no specific numbers available on property losses. Fire officials would not clarify the governor's estimate, saying assessments were still under way. The city's location on the state's central coast gives it some of the best weather in the world, with temperatures routinely topping out in the 70s, and views of the Pacific Ocean. Now with a population of about 90,000, it dates to the Spanish colonial era of California and a Roman Catholic mission established in the 1780s is a major tourist draw. But the geography that gives it beauty and a serene atmosphere also brings danger. "I'm from the East Coast and at this point I'd rather put up with this than the winter," said evacuee Jim Hatch, 40, an illustrator who returned home to pick up clothes Thursday and motored up Jesusita Road on a baby blue Piaggio scooter to see the fire. State Assemblyman Pedro Nava fled Wednesday with his wife, two dogs and a cat. They tossed pictures, documents and a few days of clothes into a car and went to the home of a friend. "I've learned how important preparation is in an emergency," he said. "The public has to be prepared to move, and in Santa Barbara they are prepared. When the police squad car came Wholesale cigarettesthrough with loudspeakers telling us to leave, there was no arguing. And they will all be back." Morse, the executive director of the environmental group Global Preservation Projects, said he's not surprised by so many fires, blaming it on global warming. "Temperatures are rising and humidity levels are dropping. It means more fires," he said. Global warming can't be blamed for specific fires, but it creates conditions that foster larger and more frequent wildfires, scientists say. "A warming climate encourages wildfires through a longer summer period that dries fuels, promoting easier ignition and faster spread," the Nobel Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change wrote in 2007. Hatch, the scooter-riding illustrator, said his wife grew up in Santa Barbara. "Her family thinks this is normal," he said. "But after livingcheap cigarettes here for 20 years I think the fires are getting worse." Elsewhere, a southern New Mexico wildfire destroyed three homes and damaged a fourth near the small mountain community of Timberon. It also burned five outbuildings, such as sheds and garages, and 10 vehicles, fire information officer Darlene Hart said. Twenty homes were evacuated. In southeastern Arizona, winds cooperated Thursday in holding down a wildfire that had destroyed three homes and critically injured a man, officials said. That blaze was 30 percent contained. Associated Press writers Raquel Maria Dillon in Santa Barbara and Seth Borenstein in Washington, D.C., contributed to this report.

SNAP ANALYSIS-Australia to delay carbon trade - media

CANBERRA, May 4 (Reuters) - Australia is set to delay its carbon trading plan by 12 months, pushing the start out to July 2011, and to announce tougher greenhouse gas reduction targets in an effort to win political backing for the most sweeping trade scheme outside Europe, media reports said on Monday.* The decision gives the government more flexibility in global negotiations at the Copenhagen climate summit later this year, where nations will try to hammer out a replacement for the Kyoto jordan basketball shoes 3.5Protocol, which expires in 2012. The government had wanted laws for the scheme to be in place by July 2009, so it could go to Copenhagen with a firm commitment.* Business groups in Australia, the world's second-biggest exporter of thermal coal and a major producer of liquefied natural gas, will welcome the decision. They had been calling for a delay, warning that the added costs of carbon trading would come at a time when business is already struggling with the global economic downturn. But business and the conservative opposition parties had called for a two-year delay to the plan.* The government always faced a tight deadline to get the carbon scheme up and running by July 2010. The delay gives the government time to fine-tune the scheme, and gives business more time to prepare. But the delay adds to the uncertainty, and business will be looking for the government to set a realistic, and solid start date for the scheme.* The carbon trade plan faced an uncertain passage through the upperjordan basketball shoes 6 ring house, the Senate, where the Greens were demanding tougher emissions cuts, and where the conservative parties wanted delays and more compensation for big emitters. The delay may help the government secure the numbers in Senate, but Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will need to significantly boost the emissions reduction target, from between 5 to 15 percent by 2020, to secure the support of the five Greens senators.* Rudd is due to go to elections in late 2010. The delay will ensure he can go to the election campaign without the added complication of bedding down the new carbon trade scheme. His promise in 2007 to ratify the Kyoto Protocl was a key issue in his election victory. The delay means the issue will be back on the agenda for the next election campaign. U.S. credit card firms seek to limit crackdown

Click to set custom HTML
By Karey Wutkowski and Juan Lagorio - AnalysisWASHINGTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. credit card companies are expected to use a White House meeting to put their best foot forward, despite an avalanche of negative publicity, aiming to blunt a congressional push for tougher regulations.Fees and interest rates will be topics at the meeting set for Thursday between 14 credit card company executives, President Barack Obama, National Economic Council Director LawrenceJordan sneaker Summers, and other government officials.Executives from Bank of America Corp (BAC.N), American Express Co (AXP.N), Citigroup Inc (C.N), Wells Fargo & Co (WFC.N), JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N), Capital One Financial Corp (COF.N), MasterCard Inc (MA.N) and Visa Inc (V.N) are expected to be at the meeting.White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said on Monday the discussion will include the transparency of the credit card companies' lending practices, and the interest rates and fees they charge.'The president believes that we can increase transparency involved, cut down on these deceptive practices, and ensure that any system that is involving fees is done in a way that is fair,' Gibbs said.Lenders are expected to argue that they are asking customers to contact them if they lose their jobs or feel under financial stress to try to renegotiate the credit card debt -- even by suspending fees or interest rates.Scott Valentin, an analyst at Friedman, Billings, Ramsey, said credit card companies could also eliminate some late payments, or over-limit fees, to please Washington.'The card companies are sensitive to what is going on around them, and public perception, and the government actions that are being contemplated, and are trying to put on a good face,' he said.Credit card issuers have received over $120 billion in taxpayer funds since October, money the government has asked them to use to expand lending. But with U.S. credit card defaults at record highs, lenders are trying to protect themselves by tightening credit limits and closing accounts, actions that have infuriated lawmakers, Jordan I sneakerconsumers, and even triggered a New York state attorney general inquiry.'Some of the very banks we rescued compound the hardships of ordinary Americans with unfair fees and interest charges,' said Senator Carl Levin, a Michigan Democrat who has co-authored credit card legislation.Citigroup Chief Financial Officer Ned Kelly said in a conference call Friday with analysts to discuss the bank's quarterly results that the credit card business has shifted from growth to risk management. He added that higher prices on credit cards helped the bank, one of the largest U.S. credit card issuers, to cushion its losses. In some cases, public anger has forced banks to withdraw fee hikes. JPMorgan stopped charging a new monthly fee to cardholders and agreed to refund the money collected, while Bank of America suspended a planned increase in some fees.TIGHTER RULES The White House meeting is scheduled for a day after a U.S. House of Representatives committee is set to consider legislation aimed at curbing deceptive billing and interest rate practices. The Federal Reserve tightened rules on credit-card practices in December, but the proposed legislation would take that further: it would give customers more time to pay their bills, Jordan II sneakerlimit interest rate increases, add more regulations, and ban credit cards access to people under 21 or 18 years of age.Credit card companies are concerned that the legislation could become a way to severely restrict their discretion to charge fees, especially at a time when banks are struggling to emerge from the financial crisis.'Our expectation is that discussions will involve broad-based economic factors such as purchasing trends, delinquencies, and challenges ... that affect the funding of credit card loans,' the American Bankers Association (ABA) spokesman Peter Garuccio said.Valentin said credit card companies would prefer to stick to the Fed's rules, but could scrap some more fees to meet government demands.'The industry would like to avoid what is being discussed now, but it... has to make some type of deference to meet what the administration and Congress want,' Valentin said.He said further limits on interest rates and fees like those proposed by Congress could cost the industry $12 billion in revenue per year, with 70 percent coming from fewer interest and 30 percent from lower fees. The ABA trade group, which represents the biggest Jordan III sneakercredit card companies, has warned that more rules could make it more difficult to price a customer's risk level and therefore reduce the availability of credit.'The administration clearly wants to keep the money flowing to the consumer, and the credit card companies are trying to protect themselves, hopefully there will be a middle ground some place,' said Anton Schutz, president of Mendon Capital.(Reporting by Karey Wutkowski and John Poirier in Washington, and Juan Lagorio in New York; Editing by Tim Dobbyn)

South Korea Agrees to a Call for Talks From North Korea

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea on Sunday accepted North Korea’s proposal for talks on a troubled joint industrial complex, setting up the first official dialogue between the countries in a year amid tensions over the North’s recent rocket launching. A Unification Ministry spokeswoman said officials of the two nations would meet Tuesday in the border town of Kaesong to discuss the factory complex. South Korea said SaturdayUGG Classic Cardy that the North had made the surprise call for a meeting. The industrial zone on the northern side of the border is the last major joint project between the nations and an important source of foreign currency for the impoverished North’s regime. Ties have been strained since President Lee Myung-bak, a conservative with a tougher approach to the North than his predecessor, took office in Seoul last year. North Korea responded by cutting off ties. The North has restricted access to the industrial complex by tightening border controls, raising concerns among participating South Korean companies about the project’s viability. The meeting comes amid rising tensions over the North’s rocket launching and its weeks-long detention of a South Korean man in Kaesong accused of denouncing the North’s political UGG Classic Minisystem. North Korea has expelled international monitors and vowed to quit six-nation disarmament talks and restart its nuclear program to protest the United Nations Security Council’s condemnation of the April 5 launching. North Korea insists it sent a satellite into space, but regional powers and the United States said that nothing reached orbit and that the launching was a test of long-range missile technology. Sunday’s announcement came a day after North Korea’s military warned South Korea to stay out of a United States-led security initiative aimed at halting the spread of weapons of mass destruction. An unidentified North Korean military spokesman said SouthUGG Classic Short Korea’s full participation in the plan, the Proliferation Security Initiative, would be seen “as a declaration of undisguised confrontation and a declaration of a war” against North Korea. South Korea’s Unification Ministry expressed regret over the North’s threats and said joining the program would not be a “declaration of confrontation or war.”

40 NH Christian center homes burn on Easter Sunday

ALTON BAY, N.H. (AP) — A massive fire damaged or destroyed dozens of wood-frame buildings, mostly unoccupied summer homes, at a 146-year-old Christian center on Easter. The fire erupted at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, when Christians were celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. But the season hadn't begun yet at the Alton Bay ChristianAir jordan XII sneaker Conference Center on Lake Winnipesaukee, and state Fire Marshal William Degnan said no injuries to civilians had been reported.'Fortunately, it was at this time of year,' he said. 'During the summer, it's full.'It was cold and windy Sunday, and Degnan said the strong winds off the lake, the state's biggest, helped spread the flames through the many cottage-style homes at the center, about 30 miles northeast of Concord.Witnesses said they watched as buildings burned to the ground in minutes.'As I was looking across the bay, I could see 600 feet of flame lengthwise,' John Lobdell told the News 9 television station in Manchester. 'The whole entire camp ground looked like Air jordan XIII sneakerit was up in flames.'One firefighter was hurt when a propane tank exploded. It says it tries to accomplish this through evangelism, encouragement of believers and equipping Christians to be effective leaders. The center, founded in 1863, is on the southeasternAir jordan XIV sneaker corner of the lake. Besides cottages, it features a 70-room motel and a park for recreational vehicles. The chairman of the center's safety organization, Russell Sample, was with Degnan as crews from numerous surrounding towns worked on the fire, whose cause hadn't been determined.'A tremendous amount of history has been destroyed,' Sample said.

Google Insists It’s a Friend to Newspapers

SAN DIEGO — It had the makings of a high-tension face-off: Eric E. Schmidt, Google’s chief executive, spoke Tuesday at a convention of newspaper executives at a time when a growing chorus in the struggling industry is accusing Google of succeeding, in part, at their expense.Any open controversy reverberated little more than a soggy newspaper hitting a doorstep. Mr. Schmidt’s speech closing the annual meeting of the Newspaper Association of America here was a lengthy discourse on the importance of newspapers and the challenges and opportunities brought about by technologiesAir jordan XIII sneaker like mobile phones. His speech was followed by polite questions from industry executives that only briefly touched upon a perennially sore point: whether the use of headlines and snippets of newspaper stories on Google News is “fair use” under copyright law or a misappropriation of newspaper content. “I was surprised that the publishers really let Google off the hook,” said Jim Chisholm, a consultant with iMedia Advisory, which advises newspaper companies around the world. “While Google News generates a lot of audience, ultimately, the question is going to be who is going to make the money out of that: Google or the publishers.”On Monday, The Associated Press said that it would work to require Web sites that use the work of news organizations, including The Associated Press and its member newspapers, to obtain permission and share revenue with them.“The ultimate resolution of all is this will be determined by how you interpret fair use,” Mr. Schmidt said of the broader debate around Google News. But Mr. Schmidt said that he was Air jordan XIV sneaker “a little confused” by news reports that singled out Google as a target of The A.P. effort. He noted that Google currently licensed and hosted news stories from The A.P. He did not directly address newspaper content, which the company does not license. Google has long insisted that its use of snippets and headlines in Google News is legal. It also said Google News drove a huge amount of traffic to newspaper Web sites, which the publishers monetize through advertising.Newspaper publishers do not want to cut off the traffic they get from Google’s search and news services and from other search engines. It is technologically simple for any newspaper Web site to keep content off Google and Google News, but few if any newspapers have chosen to do that. Publishers do resent that the company, which recently began showing ads on Google News, is profiting from their content. The A.P. has not given details about exactly how it plans to tackle the issue. Just before Mr. Schmidt’s speech, William Dean Singleton, chairman of The A.P. and chief executive of the MediaNews Group, said: “We don’t plan for anyone to use our content unless they pay for it. The licenses we do in the future will limit how and where our content is used.”Mr. Singleton said that executives at The A.P. would offerAir jordan XV sneaker recommendations on how to proceed in the coming weeks. Newspaper companies have been unwilling to test the issue in court, where Google’s fair-use arguments could prevail, and it is not clear that The A.P. plans to do so. Mr. Singleton said he expected some of MediaNews’s newspapers, which include The San Jose Mercury News and The Denver Post, would come up with a way to charge for some of their content by midyear, a model that a growing number of publishers are considering. “It’s a balancing act,” he said. “We’d like to have a pay wall but we like the traffic we get from search engines.”In his speech, Mr. Schmidt encouraged publishers to create more personalized news products that could be delivered effectively on the Web, cellphones and other devices. “We think we can build a business — again, with you guys — with significant advertising resources, where the advertising is targeted to the content,” he said. He acknowledged that many publishers were increasingly thinking about charging forAir jordan XVI sneaker their content, and said he expected the newspaper industry to eventually resemble television, where some content was free, some was purchased by subscription and some was paid for every time it was viewed. But he said he expected that advertising would remain the leading revenue model in online media. In a meeting with reporters afterward, Mr. Schmidt said Google was unlikely to license newspaper content, as it has done with The A.P., even if that content was behind a pay wall. “In a scenario where a newspaper had a subscription product, what would Google do?” he asked. “It’s highly unlikely that we would buy a subscription and give the content away free. We might be able to help the distribution of that content, but the user would have to pay.”

Petraeus Warns About Militants’ Threat to Pakistan

WASHINGTON — Gen. David H. Petraeus, the top American commander for Iraq and Afghanistan, warned a Senate panel on Wednesday that militant extremists in Pakistan “could literally take down their state” if left unchallenged, as he and two other top officials presented a grim picture of growing dangers in the region. Michele A. Flournoy, a top Defense Department official, told the panel that there would be “higher human costs” for the United States in Afghanistan this year, while the chief of the military’s Special Operations commandos, Adm. Eric T. Olson, called the situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan Jordan 23 shoes“increasingly dire.” The trio testified jointly before occasionally skeptical members of the Senate Armed Services Committee, who had their first chance to question in public some of the officials who helped formulate President Obama’s new strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, which was announced at the White House last week. The panel pressed the officials on two major issues: how the Obama administration will measure progress in the region and whether Pakistan and its spy agency, the Directorate for Inter-Services Intelligence, or ISI, can be trusted. Mr. Obama has promised more aid to Pakistan and called on its leaders to crack down on Al Qaeda and other militant groups that operate within its borders. Under sharp questioning from Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona, Ms. Flournoy, the under secretary of defense for policy, acknowledged the administration’s concerns about a wing of the ISI, which American intelligence officials say is providing money and military assistance to the Taliban across the border in Afghanistan. “I think ISI is a — or parts of ISI — are certainly a problem to be dealt with,” Ms. Flournoy said. Mr. McCain, an early proponent of the buildup of American forces in Iraq, also questioned whether the United States now had enough troops in Afghanistan. Gen. David D. McKiernan, Jordan melo 1.5 shoes the commander of NATO and American forces in Afghanistan, has asked for 30,000 more American troops, and Mr. Obama has so far committed about 21,000 of those. The president will make a decision this fall on whether 10,000 or so more troops will be sent. “I think it would be far, far better to announce that we will have the additional 10,000 troops dispatched and they will clearly be needed,” Mr. McCain told Ms. Flournoy. He added: “It’s a big country. We know that was a vital element to our success in Iraq. To dribble out these decisions, I think, can create an impression of incrementalism.” Ms. Flournoy did not react immediately to Mr. McCain’s comment, but much later in the hearing she said that “I would never have used the phrase incrementalism” to describe what she called a “very strong commitment” of American troops that are to increase to 68,000 from 38,000 by the end of this year. Senators on the panel expressed some impatience with the Obama administration’s failure so far to articulate benchmarks for judging progress in Afghanistan and Pakistan, although Ms. Flournoy promised that they would be ready soon. “How does this end?” asked Senator Jim Webb, Democrat of Jordan2.5 shoesVirginia, echoing comments that General Petraeus once made when he was the commander in Iraq. Ms. Flournoy responded that “a key point of defining success is when both the Afghans and the Pakistanis have both the capability and the will to deal with the remaining threat themselves.” General Petraeus said that he would “echo” Ms. Flournoy and that “the task will be for them to shoulder the responsibilities of their own security.” The general also said that the government was doing a “deep dive” of investigation into claims made Tuesday by the leader of the Pakistani Taliban, Baitullah Mehsud, that his group was planning an attack on Washington. American intelligence officials were dismissive of Mr. Mehsud’s Jordan 3.5 shoesclaim, but General Petraeus told the panel that “any time there is any threat that could be against the homeland, I think you have to take it seriously.” He added, “Obviously everyone is quite riveted on analyzing that and seeing what further we can find out about that.”

Specter to oppose union bill

WASHINGTON - In a setback for organized labor, Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania said yesterday he will oppose a bill that would make it easier for workers to form unions. Specter was the only Republican to support the Employee Free Choice Act two years ago, and unions were hoping he might be the crucial 60th vote needed to overcome an expected GOP filibuster of the measure when it is taken up this summer. Democrats and two independents who usually vote with them controlShox 45 58 seats, and would control 59 if Democrat Al Franken is seated in the contested Minnesota race. In a floor speech, Specter called it a "very emotional issue, with labor looking to this legislation to reverse the steep decline in union membership and business expressing great concern about added costs, which would drive many companies out of business or overseas." Specter has faced unusually heavy pressure from both labor and business interests and is likely to face a tough re-election challenge next year. Business groups, which have already spent more than $20 million to lobby against the bill, applauded the decision. "We applaud the senator for taking a principled standNike Men Air Force 1 Low to support Main Street employers and workers in Pennsylvania," Thomas J. Donohue, president and CEO of the US Chamber of Commerce, said in a statement. John Sweeney, president of the AFL-CIO - which earlier yesterday released a poll it commissioned that showed 72 percent of Americans favoring the bill - called Specter's decision "frankly a disappointment and a rebuke to working people, to his own constituents in Pennsylvania,Shox Legend Trainer and working families around the country."

Israeli Coalition Appears Fated to Clash With U.S.

JERUSALEM, March 19 -- The foreign minister of Israel's incoming government lives in a West Bank settlement and will begin life as a diplomat battling the perception that he is anti-Arab. A leading contender to become defense minister once characterized the two-state solution that forms the basis of U.S. and international policy toward Israel and the Palestinians UGG Wallingfordas "a story the Western world tells with Western eyes." And the potential make-or-break votes in the country's new parliamentary coalition belong to legislators from religious parties that would like to expand settlement construction in the occupied West Bank. Israel's next government seems tailor-made for conflict with an administration in Washington that supports a Palestinian state and is expected to push for progress on drawing its borders. Prime Minister-designate Binyamin Netanyahu is himself a skeptic when it comes to Palestinian statehood and has referred to U.S.-backed peace talks as a waste of time. While Netanyahu has compromised in past dealings with Washington -- an earlier term as prime minister was cut short after he made land concessions at the urging of President Bill Clinton-- his new coalition partners may not leave him much room to maneuver. "The more narrow the government the more difficult it will be for Netanyahu to make some gesture towards the U.S.," said Gerald Steinberg, chairman of the political science department at Bar-Ilan University outside Tel Aviv. On issues such as settlements, if pressure comes from Washington, "it is likelyUGG Whitley to lead to a major confrontation." Israel and the United States still agree on a broad set of issues -- including some, such as curbing Iran's nuclear plans, that Israel's new government wants at the top of the agenda. But Israeli, Palestinian and U.S. analysts and officials agree that the two governments will likely be at odds on questions of West Bank settlements and movement toward a Palestinian state. From the Palestinian perspective, a push from Washington is seen as the most likely chance for progress after eight years in which President George W. Bush was widely perceived as unwilling to challenge Israeli positions. "They cannot avoid the challenge forever," said Qwais Abulaila, a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council. "If the United States wants to keep its credibility, they have to air shoxhave the courage to confront them." Already, there has been controversy over a possible Netanyahu national security appointee, Uzi Arad. He has been denied a U.S. visa because of a meeting he had with a Pentagon employee involved in leaking information. Arad, a former Mossad agent, has said he did not receive any classified information and expects the visa problem to be resolved. The election last month that put Netanyahu's Likud party in position to govern followed a period in which Israelis had soured on prospects for a negotiated peace. Israel dismantled settlements and withdrew from the Gaza Strip in 2005, but the move did not bring the expected quiet. Rockets and mortars fall regularly into Israeli towns. The Islamist group Hamas won the 2006 Palestinian parliamentary elections and, about a year later, forced the rival Fatah faction out of Gaza. In the context of that history, said Netanyahu senior adviser Nike AIR ForceRon Dermer, there is far more to discuss than Israeli settlement construction in the West Bank. "My impression is that the number of people who believe that issue is the difference between peace in the Middle East and war are few and far between, after all that happened in Gaza," Dermer said.

Brown Hit Rihanna Before: Report

Chris Brown's alleged pre-Grammy Night violence is part of an escalating pattern of brutality against Rihanna, according to TMZ. The gossip site made the startling claim as Los Angeles officials are scrambling to make a case against the R&B singer who has reportedly reunited with his songstress girlfriend and is due in court today. When Los Angeles police interviewed Rihanna Shox FSMafter the Feb. 8 attack, she allegedly told them that Brown had hit her before and that those incidents were growing “more violent” each time, TMZ reported. The "Thirty-Mile-Zone" site also claims that even more gruesome pictures of a battered Rihanna, 21, have yet to be circulated. TMZ, which obtained the first picture of a post-beat down Rihanna, says that this set, taken a day after the attack, is far worse. “The bruises and swelling far more pronounced,” TMZ claims, citing several law enforcement sources. “We're told these photos show injuries that could be devastating in a case against Brown.” But as of right now, there seemss no case against the 19-year-old Brown. Though he is scheduled to appear in L.A. court today to be arraigned on suspicion of making criminalNike Air Force 1 Mid threats, the Los Angeles District Attorney said there are no charges pending. “We have filed nothing today” Sandi Gibbons, a spokeswoman for the DA told the New York Daily News. “It’s still under investigation by the police.” The Daily News reached out to Brown’s celebrity lawyer, Mark Geragos -- who’s represented Michael Jackson and Winona Ryder --and he laughed when asked about the pending charges, and then offered no comment. There is speculation by legal experts that a deal may be in the works to spare Brown felony charges. “Certainly good attorneys will try to intercede and work out something before charges are brought to court. But these types of pleas are more typical in misdemeanor cases,” former district attorney Dmitry Gorin told the News. The fact that Rihanna and Brown are reportedly back UGG Upsidetogether could hamper any move to prosecute. Rihanna would be a key witness whose testimony would be critical in any case against Brown. TMZ suggests, however, that those yet-to-be-seen photos, coupled with the officer’s testimony about hearing about the escalating violence in the young couple’s relationship on the night of the alleged attack could be enough to put him away. Geragos suggested to the News that he might have more to say this afternoon. Stay tuned.

Marine One Upgrade Now Looks Less Likely

Marine One Upgrade Now Looks Less Likely The prospects for building a new fleet of high-tech presidential helicopters darkened yesterday, after the new commander in chief called the costly Bush administration effort an example of military procurement "gone amok" and said he thinks the existing White House helicopter fleet "seems perfectly adequate." President Obama's remarks at the opening of a meeting Shox Fleetwith lawmakers on fiscal responsibility did not rule out finishing the program, now expected to cost more than $11.2 billion, or nearly twice the original estimate. He joked that he has not had a helicopter before, so perhaps "I've been deprived and I -- I didn't know it." But Obama's disclosure that he had asked Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates to conduct a "thorough review of the helicopter situation" amounted to a shot across the bow of large defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin, the helicopter's manufacturer. In recent years, contractors have experienced multiple cost overruns -- totaling $300 billion on the 95 largest military programs, according to the Government Accountability Office -- without incurring substantial penalty. Billions of dollars have been spent to develop the VH-71 helicopter fleet, which is meant to replace the iconic Sikorsky Marine One helicopters the White House has used for a Nike Air Force 1 Midquarter-century. But technical problems -- the aircraft weighs too much and is to be outfitted with sophisticated electronic gear that has not yet been developed -- have repeatedly forced the program's restructuring, and in recent months, the Pentagon ordered key work halted to reassess its design and necessity. Senior Pentagon officials, including outgoing procurement chief John J. Young Jr. and testing chief Charles E. McQueary, have frequently described the VH-71 as an example of how military systems should not be bought: The White House security office repeatedly added highly complex security requirements, and the Pentagon began building the helicopters without first settling on a design and testing the key components. Costs have risen to the point where the price of each helicopter will exceed that of any of the much larger presidential Boeing 747 jets known as Air Force One. That fact caused Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), the senior Republican on the Armed Services Committee, to say at the meeting yesterday that he was unaware of "any more graphic UGG Goldeneyedemonstration of how good ideas have cost the taxpayers an enormous amount of money." McCain told Obama that he would "have to make some tough decisions about not only what we procure, but how we procure it." The president responded, "This is going to be one of our highest priorities." Navy Lt. Clay Doss, a spokesman for the VH-71 program, said, "It wouldn't be appropriate for me to comment on the president's remarks." A Lockheed spokesman also declined to comment.

Sirius XM May Get Investment From Liberty to Avert Bankruptcy

Feb. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Liberty Media Corp. may say as soon as today that it will provide hundreds of millions of dollars to Sirius XM Radio Inc. and help the pay-radio company avert bankruptcy, a person familiar with the matter said. John Malone’s Liberty Media is still negotiating Shox Turb OH+ SLa rescue for Sirius XM, said the person, who declined to be identified because the talks are ongoing and an agreement may not be reached. Sirius XM said last week it may be forced to file for bankruptcy as soon as today if it can’t refinance debt. Sirius XM faces a deadline today to repay $175 million in bonds held by Charles Ergen’s EchoStar Corp., a satellite- equipment company. Either Ergen or Malone, who control the two largest U.S. satellite-television companies, would be able to use New York-based Sirius XM to integrate TV and radio services. Patrick Reilly, a spokesman for Sirius XM, declined to comment. Liberty Media spokeswoman Courtnee Ulrich didn’t return a phone call and an e-mail seeking comment. Under the deal being negotiated, Malone may pay SiriusUGG Sandra XM $265 million in return for board seats and a minority stake in the company, the New York Times reported yesterday, citing people familiar with the talks. Malone may then pay another $200 million to Sirius XM later this year, the newspaper said. Such an agreement would allow Chief Executive Mel Karmazin to keep his job, the Times said. A group of Sirius XM creditors said yesterday it plans to seek Karmazin’s removal if the company files for bankruptcy instead of making a deal to remain solvent. “Creditors believe that a precipitous bankruptcy filing willNike Men Air Force 1 Low not be in their best interests,” said Edward Weisfelner, a lawyer with Brown Rudnick LLP who’s representing the creditors, in a phone interview. “Our group is concerned that management not use the threat of bankruptcy as a negotiating tool.” Convertible Bonds Sirius XM exchanged about $172.5 million of its convertible bonds due December 2009 for senior notes maturing in June 2011, it said in a statement last week. The amount is almost half of the $400 million in notes the company had maturing at yearend. The shares rose 3 cents to 10 cents on Feb. 13 in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. The stock has plunged 94 percent since Karmazin, 65, completed the all-stock takeover of larger rival XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. by Sirius in July. Since September, the stock has traded for less than $1 a UGG Selineshare as investors became concerned that Karmazin wouldn’t be able to manage the debt or meet growth projections. Highs and lows of election drama

The cleaners were starting to sweep an emptying floor at Likud's gathering, even as Kadima crowds cheered while waiting for their leader Tzipi Livni to speak. "Bibi got it in the face," was one translation of the Hebrew slang they chanted in gleeful reference to their surprise turnaround over Benjamin Netanyahu's party. The fact that Kadima was leading by only about 1% as the partial results came in did little to dampen the spirits of the party faithful, many clad in "Don't worry - Believni" T-shirts. Jubilant supporters kept piling into the glitzy hotel,UGG Classic Tall Patent Paisley hugging friends as Kadima's theme song, a souped-up version of Israel's national anthem, thumped over the loudspeakers. Evi Atar Sadon, 25, said he had jumped into his car and driven through storm-lashed streets from the southern town of Ashkelon as soon as he saw the first exit polls. "We don't feel the rain, we feel the heat - love is in the air," he said 'Nervous' There was anxiety, though, with Kadima leading by only one or two seats. "I'm a little bit nervous, I want to be sure she wins," said Nira Ben Ozer, 29, a Tel Aviv television producer who had left a drinking session in a local bar to "be part of it all". And, try as they might to suggest they were confident all along, many Livni fans were surprised to find Kadima had confounded the pollsters, who had shown the party trailing Likud for months. Mordechai Efrach, 41, was bouncing up and down to "Livni boy" - a Air Force 25catchy answer to the "Obama girl" song from the recent US presidential campaign - with an Israeli flag in his hand and a wide grin on his face. "Of course!" he exclaimed, when asked if he had expected the result - and then burst into giggles, suggesting the complete opposite. The Kadima crowd booed as Mr Netanyahu was shown on screens addressing his supporters in a draughty hangar across town. "With God's help, I will lead the next government," he announced on the basis of the dominance of right-wing parties in the results, as his audience cheered. 'Confusing and disappointing' But emotions were mixed among the Likud supporters, at a gathering that was subdued from the beginning as rumours spread that Kadima had performed better than predicted. Party activists were outnumbered by journalists. There were no Likud flags, few party T-shirts and little music. As the first exit polls came through, party activist Rami - who gave only his first name - took a deep breath, exchanged glances with his friend Sali, then stared glumly back at the Shox Dendarascreen as the bar graphs flashed up, 30 seats for Kadima, 28 for Likud. "It's very confusing, and very disappointing," he said. As television pictures of Kadima jubilation were projected overhead, a small mob of young men surged around Mr Netanyahu, shouting "Bibi, bibi, bibi - we don't trust anyone but Bibi". But many of the predominantly male supporters stood stony faced, not bothering to jostle with the TV cameras for a glimpse of their leader. "I'm very, very, very, very unhappy," said chef Gil Afredo, 34, his face a picture of his disappointment. "I don't know what Bibi's mistake was." But bank employee Alon Hadad, 33, still seemed genuinely excited. "I feel very good," he said. "I think the right wing won Nike Women Air Force 1 Low Mid Highthe election," Tzipi Livni can't form a coalition. "We must demonstrate that we are happy," he added, jumping up and down. 'Very grey' Others were more cautious in their optimism. But they believed too that even if Ms Livni had won slightly more seats, Mr Netanyahu would end up prime minister as he was better placed to form a government. "It's very grey," said party activist Raphael Cohen by phone from the Likud gathering, three hours later, as the partial results began to confirm the exit polls: "People don't know whether to be happy or sad - we think the gap is small. I definitely believe there is still hope." Finally, after a fairly significant delay - was she getting cold feet about declaring victory? - Ms Livni strode onto the stage to greet her supporters. She was met with rapturous applause, a sea of Israeli flags, and had to wait for chants of "Kadima, Kadima" and "Tzipi Livni, Tzipi Livni" to subside before she could continue with herShox FSM speech. Composed and confident, she delivered a clear message - the Israeli people had chosen Kadima, she would be the leader of a unity government, she would forge ahead with a new type of politics. When it was over, as the hall emptied, Alon Van Dam, 26, one of Likud's paid campaigners said he was "elated". Really, given the uncertainties? "Well,UGG Classic Tall my first reaction is to be elated, but I have to follow with cautious optimism," came the response. "It will be a process, forming the government." And so the flags were furled, the taxis called and supporters spilled out into the blustery street. Snow Britain: Grit crisis 'putting lives at risk'

A national shortage of grit is putting lives at risk on Britain's snow covered roads, the country' biggest motoring organisation warned yesterday. The AA said many roads were turning into "death traps" and warned that the country faced a dangerous "road safety crisis". With weather forecasters predicting another five days of freezing temperatures and snow, the AA called on the Government to step in and ask European countries to Shox Respondprovide emergency supplies of salt. Around 40,000 tonnes are already on the way from Spain. Critics said the grit shortage had proved Britain was woefully unprepared for the extended cold snap. The Daily Telegraph disclosed two days ago that some councils would run out of salt by the weekend. Several have now either run out or have such low stock levels that very few roads are being gritted. In some areas less than 20 per cent of roads have been treated. The AA said councils were "running on empty" with the worst affected areas in Wiltshire, Hertfordshire, Surrey, Derbyshire and parts of Wales. It said some cities including St Albans, Herts were "unable to cope". Some councils have used almost their entire winterAir Force 25 supply of salt, amounting to thousands of tonnes, in less than a week and they are now down to their last 100 tonnes. At least eight are prioritising A roads and abandoning other routes to freeze over and become impassable. Wiltshire is having to "water down" its remaining salt with sand. AA President, Edmund King said last night: "Some of the councils only have 100 tonnes left and that's nothing, it's a drop in the ocean. Many, many local roads are going untreated and drivers don't know which are or aren't until they start skidding all over the place. There are also hundreds of miles of frozen pavements. "The Government should step in. If we can't up the production of salt, and it appears we are at full stretch, then you have to look at supplies from elsewhere like Holland. "In St Albans cars couldn't get up the main road. Surely in this day and age we can keep the main roads in our main cities running." Mr King blamed councils for consistently cutting back on winter maintenance in recent years and said they had been "caught out" by the cold snap. RAC motoring strategist Adrian Tink said: "With UK motorists giving the Government £45 billion a year in taxes, they will feel pretty annoyed that there isn't enough cash to keep UGG Sunburst Tallall the road networks moving." Mark Wallace, of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said: "It defies belief that the Government was so badly prepared for the snowy conditions. It's disgraceful." Warwickshire is rationing gritting, while in Wiltshire only main routes are being gritted. Gloucestershire halved its salting operation to preserve stocks. Tory local government spokesman Caroline Spelman said: "Labour ministers need to be open about the true extent of the grit crisis and explain why there are insufficient supplies." Cheshire-based Salt Union, which operates Britain's biggest rock salt mine and provides 90 per cent of the salt used on the roads, said it could not meet demand. The company said it had looked into importing salt from Germany but there was also high demand for salt there and it would take time to ship it to the UK by boat. Spokeswoman Katie Moffat, said: "We are mining at maximum capacity, we are extracting 30,000 tons a week and that is going out as soon as we extract it. Because of the prolonged bad Shox Ride 2 IIweather our stores are empty." DA Baldwin and Son in Wolverhampton, the biggest supplier in the West Midlands, completely ran out of supplies. But a British Salt depot in Middlewich, Cheshire, had 100,000 tonnes of low-grade salt which had accumulated over the 15 years as a by-product from manufacturing table salt. Some 200 lorries queued to collect it. Derek Turner, from the Highways Agency which is responsible for motorways and A roads, admitted: "The salt supplies are being gradually used up. We have about three or four days left." Several councils accused the Highways Agency of hijacking its salt supplies. A spokesman for Wiltshire, which has used 7,000 tonnes and has only 1,000 tonnes left, said: "All new salt supplies are currently being directed to national priorities." Ministers face calls for an urgent statement to ParliamentNike Air Force 1 Mid over the crisis. Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon said: "We are trying to encourage the movement of salt from areas that have enough, I won't say plenty, to those areas that are having some difficulty." Paul Bettison, Chairman of the Local Government Association's Environment Board, said: "Salt is available in other European countries. This a real opportunity for the Government to show leadership of the country and to lead us all in the quest for more salt." :: The British Carrot Growers' Association yesterday said sales of the vegetable have gone up as children used them to decorate snowmen.

Orlando Magic have become a real threat in the East

Orlando Magic have become a real threat in the East
And now, the Magic's Mystery Tour.
Lakerdom is gearing Shox Rollinup for Monday's game here with Cleveland, the latest in a series of, quote, possible Finals previews, unquote, but don't look now, there's one tonight too.
With less fanfare, or none, Nike Air Force 1 Midthe Lakers are about to play the NBA's hottest team, which doesn't happen to have LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce or Ray Allen.
This team isn't part of the old Lakers-Celtics rivalry or the new Celtics-Cavaliers rivalry, or any rivalry outside Florida.
The last time it got past the second round of the playoffs, Shaquille O'Neal played there. It was soShox Respond long ago, Shaq hadn't even heard of Kobe, although he was taking an increasingly dimmer view of Penny Hardaway.
Aw, you guessed it.
It's the Orlando Magic, which isn't mentioned in the same breath with the Lakers, Celtics and Cavaliers, but is right there with them at 31-8, which is even more impressive when you consider the Magic started 0-2.
This tour has been Magical, all right. After starting the trip with a win in San Antonio, the Magic dropped an NBA-record 23 three-pointers on the Kings in a 139-107 rout.
Even those pesky pundits have noticed.Shox Ride 2 II ESPN's Jeff Van Gundy said he was revising his earlier view that the Magic wasn't a serious contender.
Van Gundy is the brother of Orlando Coach Stan Van Gundy, so this is what you'd call a tough audience.
"What most of the people who are coaches or have been coaches in the league say, the record is what counts," said Stan at his team's practice Thursday in Hawthorne.
"That's what you're judged by. We could talk about subjective stuff and matchups and everything else, butNike Men Air Force 1 High 31-8 is 31-8.
"Cut it however you want, it's 31-8. Unlike some teams, we haven't played an inordinate number of home games. We haven't played five more games at home. As a matter of fact, by the end of the trip, we'll have played three more away.
"We're 31-8. Are we that good? Time will tell."
Actually, the Lakers have played six more at home. With their "road" game against the Clippers, they've been in Staples Center for 23 of 38 games.
But do people go around saying the Lakers have had a soft schedule?
N-o-o-o-o.
Dwight Howard, the Magic's 23-year-old prodigy, now blossoming into a superstar, tried Shox Bella ILtelling his Olympics teammates in China how good the Magic would be.
They were nice enough to listen politely, for a second or two.
"They kind of laughed it off a little bit," Howard said. "Which, the way we ended the season last year, you can understand."

Obama Shelves Jobs-Credit Proposal

Obama Shelves Jobs-Credit Proposal
Bowing to widespread Democratic skepticism, President-elect Barack Obama will drop his bid to include a business tax break he once touted in the economic stimulus bill now taking shape on Capitol Hill, aides said last night.
Obama suggested the $3,000-per-job credit last week Nike Air Force 1 Midas one of five individual and business tax incentives aimed at winning Republican support. Republicans reacted favorably to the higher-than-expected ratio of tax breaks to spending for road projects, alternative energy production, health-care technology and unemployment benefits. But they offered mixed reviews of his specific tax proposals and floated their own, including cuts in corporate and capital gains taxes.
Stronger opposition came from Democrats, who dismissed the $3,000 credit to employers for every job created or saved as ripe for abuse and difficult to administer. When no champion for the proposal came forward, the president-elect decided to sideline the incentive.
"We've always said we're open to other ideas. This was never set in stone," said a senior Obama adviser of the decision.
Congressional leaders are aiming to deliver a stimulus bill to Obama's desk in the White House by mid-February, but as the process unfolds, the legislation appears to be growing in size and complexity.
The stimulus and a separate financial rescue package, which is also meeting with objections from lawmakers (story, Page A1), are aimed at preventing the economy from sliding further. But Congress has expressed reluctance to rush through such expensive bills without careful consideration of the details.
Even before assuming office, Obama is taking an unusually direct role in legislative efforts to move both bills forward, personally phoning lawmakers and dispatching senior aides to Capitol Hill on a near-daily basis. Today the president-elect will speak toNike Men Air Force 1 High Senate Democrats at their weekly luncheon, and he will soon appear before House Democrats, although a date has not been set, a senior Obama aide said.
Obama expects to meet with Republicans in both chambers, the aide added, although not until after he is inaugurated next Tuesday.
Former Treasury secretary Lawrence H. Summers, who will serve as Obama's chief White House economic adviser, is scheduled to meet this afternoon with House Ways and Means Committee members, to begin crafting tax provisions for the stimulus bill.
Obama advisers said further adjustments may be made to the president-elect's tax priorities, including to a proposed $500 payroll tax credit for individuals. Many Democrats have criticized Obama's idea of distributing the benefit over 12 months, saying it would amount to about $20 per paycheck for workers who are paid every two weeks. They would prefer to distribute the credit over a shorter period.
Obama also has suggested tax incentives for businesses to make capital investments. Such benefits are popular acrossNike Men Air Force 1 Low party lines and have been successful in recent years. But another Obama proposal, to allow companies to deduct larger portions of recent losses, has raised eyebrows on the Hill, where lawmakers see it as a costly reward for behavior that was possibly irresponsible.
Ways and Means Committee Chairman  Charles B. Rangel (D-N.Y.) announced last week that he would seek to increase unemployment benefits in the plan. Democrats also are floating generous incentives for domestic energy production and for college tuition relief.

Roy may return Saturday from hamstring trouble

Roy may return Saturday from hamstring trouble
By Anne M. Peterson, AP Sports Writer
PORTLAND, Ore. — Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy could return from his hamstring injury as early as Saturday, when Portland hosts the Golden State Warriors.
The Blazers have gone 2-2 while their All-Star has beenShox Basketball injured.
Roy, averaging 23 points a game, was cleared for practice after he was checked out by team doctors on Wednesday night. But he was not given the green light to play in Portland's 84-83 victory over the Detroit Pistons as a precaution.
Roy hasn't played since Dec. 27 against Toronto.
His life certainly hasn't been uneventful during his rehabilitation. Roy and his fiancee Tiana Bardwell had their second child, Mariah Leilani Roy, on Monday.

At Wednesday's game at the Rose Garden, a fan held a sign: "Welcome Mariah! (Baby Roy)."
MILES UPDATE:@ Darius Miles, trying to make an NBA comeback, was waived by the Memphis Grizzlies earlier this week after playing in two games.
That's a concern for the Blazers, because Miles could count against the team's salary cap if he plays in a total of 10 NBA games.
Miles had microfracture surgery on his right knee in November 2006, and did not play again for the Blazers, who waived him at the end of last season.
Right now, Portland is off the hookShox 2:40 for the final $18 million of Miles' deal because an independent doctor said his knee injury was career ending.
However, if he plays in 10 games, his salary counts again for Portland.
Miles also appeared in six preseason games with the Boston Celtics. According to a Yahoo Sports report, those games count toward Miles' 10-game total. That means Miles has to appear in just two more games to go back on Portland's books.
A spokesman for the NBA confirmed to The Associated Press on Thursday that the Boston games do count as part of Miles' total.
ANGRY IN-LAW:@ The Minneapolis Star Tribune added detail to reports about Joel Przybilla's grandmother writing NBA Commissioner David Stern to protest a fine levied on the Blazers' 7-foot-1 center.
Turns out, it's the grandmother of Przybilla's wife who is the feisty 80-plus basketball fan.
Przybilla was fined $7,500 for a clash with New Orleans center Tyson Chandler during a game last Friday. Chandler was ejected from the game and had to serve a one-game suspension.
Stella Stawski, 83, of Milwaukee told the newspaper she intended to write Stern, but admits it probably wouldn't help her grandson-in-law's cause.
"The altercation started with the other young man," Stawski said. "The first punch was done to Joel, not the other way around. ... That was a totally flagrant foul."
RUDY'S PITCH:@ Rudy Fernandez sings and even plays a little guitar -- badly -- as part of his bid to be included in the NBA's slam dunk contest during All-Star festivities.
Fernandez is one of three players -- along with Joe Alexander and Russell Westbrook -- vying for the chance to go up against Dwight Howard (the defending champion), Rudy Gay and NateShox Warrior Robinson.
The catch is that the final contestant will be decided by fans. Fernandez made some campaign videos, posted on NBA.com.
In one he sings, "Vota mi, por favor," making it clear he should stick with basketball as a career choice. Although, arguably, he's a better singer than Greg Oden was this summer when he butchered an 'N Sync song and the video popped up on YouTube.

Madoff Sons Told Prosecutors of Jewelry, Lawyer Says (Update1)

Madoff Sons Told Prosecutors of Jewelry, Lawyer Says (Update1)
Jan. 5 (Bloomberg) -- The sons of Bernard Madoff, who is accused of orchestrating a massive Ponzi scheme, alerted prosecutors last week that their father mailed them jewelry, watches and other items in violation of an asset freeze, his lawyer said.
U.S. prosecutors today asked a federal judge to revoke Madoff’s bail because he violated the freeze. U.S. MagistrateShox 45 Judge Ronald Ellis asked for legal briefs by Jan. 7 from the government and from Madoff, who remains free in his Manhattan apartment on a $10 million bond.
Madoff mailed five packages of items, including “some very valuable jewelry,” after his assets were frozen by a judge in a related civil lawsuit, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Marc Litt in court today. Defense lawyer Ira Sorkin said the objects, which included pens and $25 cuff links, were heirlooms innocently sent to Madoff’s children and brother, Peter.
“We believe the children brought it to the attention of the government,” Sorkin said in an interview after court. Madoff, 70, was accused last month of directing a $50 billion Ponzi scheme out of his New York investment firm after his sons reported him to prosecutors.
Madoff’s sons turned him in on Dec. 10 after he confessed to them, their attorney, Martin Flumenbaum, previously said. Madoff, who was arrested by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents the following day, is under house arrest and subject to electronic surveillance.
Changed Circumstance’
Litt said in court today that the transfer of valuables is a “changed circumstance” that warranted the revocation of bail. Litt said one of the jewelry items may be worth as much as $1 million.
“In the face of a direct and clear order of a court, he violated the order,” Litt said.
Sorkin said in an interview and in court that he learned from Madoff and his wife, Ruth, on Dec. 30 of their transfer of assets and instructed his clients to Shox 45retrieve the items, which they’re doing. The government now possesses some of the assets, he said. Sorkin said he also told the government about some of the transfers. The transferred items included a $200 pair of mittens given to Madoff by his granddaughter, he said.
Separately, prosecutors were told of the transfers last week by Madoff’s children and by a New York City couple to whom Madoff sent some objects, Sorkin said. The couple, who haven’t been identified, are now vacationing in Florida, he said.
Mark Madoff, 42, ran Madoff’s proprietary trading business and Andrew Madoff, 40, was a director of that unit. Flumenbaum didn’t return a call seeking comment today. The sons haven’t been charged with wrongdoing.
Victims’ Losses
As Bernard Madoff fought today to stay out of jail, his alleged victims continued to detail their losses with him and regulators sought to identify assets they could use to repay customers.
Bard College’s president disclosed today that the liberal- arts school in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, lost about $3 million in investments related to Madoff. Harley International Ltd., a hedge fund run by Cayman Islands-based Euro-Dutch Management Ltd., invested all of its assets with Madoff, a person familiar with the matter said. The fund managed $2.76 billion as of Oct. 31.
Last week, Rosenman Family LLC, managed by Martin Rosenman, president of Bronx-based Stuyvesant Fuel Service Corp., sued Irving Picard, the trustee appointed to supervise the unwinding of Madoff’s firm, seeking return of a $10 million investment.
Liquid Assets
Picard has identified $830 million in liquid assets in Madoff’s defunct brokerage firm, Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, according to the Securities Investor Protection Corp. The assets may be subject to recovery by Madoff’s customers, SIPC Chief Executive Officer Stephen Harbeck told a congressional committee today in prepared testimony.
Picard sent 8,000 claim forms on Jan. 2 to people who appeared to have invested with Madoff, and heShox 45 published a notice telling them how to recover lost money. The forms were sent to people “who appear to have been customers” of Madoff’s firm “with open accounts within the past 12 months,” according to a statement. Madoff’s advisory business was estimated to have had more than 4,000 customers, people familiar with the matter said last month.
At today’s hearing, Litt said the mailing of the valuables by Bernard and Ruth Madoff, which Sorkin said began Dec. 24, violated an agreement to freeze Madoff’s assets as part of a Securities and Exchange Commission lawsuit.
Flight Risk
Litt said that the dispersal of the valuables was a risk to the public that justified imprisonment before trial. He also said that the likelihood that Madoff would eventually be imprisoned increased the risk of him fleeing prosecution.
“The case against the defendant is strong, and it’s getting stronger,” the prosecutor said, making it more likely Madoff will flee. The transfer was an “obstruction of justice.”
“The bail conditions that were originally set by this court haven’t been violated one iota,” Sorkin responded in court, adding that he learned of the government revocation bid today.
Janice Oh, a spokeswoman for Interim Manhattan U.S. Attorney Lev Dassin, declined to comment on how prosecutors first learned of the asset transfers.
Some of the transferred items belonged to Bernard Madoff and some to Ruth Madoff. On Dec. 26, Ruth Madoff, who is also represented by Sorkin’s firm, agreed with the government not to dispose of her assets, Litt said. She hasn’t been charged with a crime.
Ellis asked for legal briefs on whether the dissipation of assets constitutes a risk of harm to the community that would warrant a change in Madoff’s bail status.
Peter Madoff’s lawyer, John Wing, didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment.
The case is U.S. v. Madoff, 08-mag-2735, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York (Manhattan).

The New York Jets' other big decision: Favre

by Dave Hutchinson/The Star-Ledger

Two months ago Eric Mangini named his son Zach Brett. Do you think he might want to change it now?

While the Jets decided to fire ManginiShox TW Monday after three seasons, team owner Woody Johnson made a plea to have 39-year-old quarterback Brett Favre return next season despite an error-laden, uneven performance down the stretch that was as indicative of the Jets' collapse as anything else.

"I hope so," Johnson said Monday when asked if he expected Favre back for a second season with the Jets.

When it was pointed out how Favre struggled down the stretch -- the future Hall of Famer threw just two touchdowns and was intercepted nine times during the Jets' 1-4 finish -- Johnson quickly dismissed it.

"I think Brett Favre was a huge positive net for this franchise," he said.

Perhaps it's all the attention and Shox Saya+glamour that Favre has brought to the organization, not to mention the number of jerseys he has sold.

Some of Favre's teammates, however, were less enthused about the idea of the quarterback coming back, and several players privately pointed to Favre -- and his league-high 22 interceptions -- as the reason for the team's demise and Mangini's firing.

"All the money they spent on bringing in players, the new stadium and the quarterback," said one player when asked why he thinks Mangini was fired.

Said another player: "It's the quarterback throwing the ball all over the place. And he didn't suffer any repercussions. He kept doing it. People said Eric called him out in meetings; I didn't see it. Eric treated him like he was Brett Favre. A lot of guys didn't like it."

Favre, who has two years left on his Shox Arraw+contract at $13 million and $14 million respectively, was not seen at the Jets' training facility in Florham Park Monday, and there was no word about an MRI on his right shoulder that he had said was scheduled for Monday.

General manager Mike Tannenbaum said he talked with Favre Monday and told him to go home and think about what he wants to do. He didn't give Favre a timetable for when he needs to make a decision about whether or not to play in 2009.

Tannenbaum was also noncommittal on whether he needed a decision from Favre before hiring a coach.

"To me, the natural course of events is to get the head coach in place, fill the staff," he said. "And we've got to address all the roster issues. Obviously Brett is prominent, but there's other important roster decisions we need to make."

And after saying last week that he Shox Pursuit+wanted to make a quick decision, Favre backpedaled after Sunday's season-ending loss to the Dolphins.

"The obvious choice would be a quick decision based on what happened" in the Miami game, he said. "It's a hasty, irrational decision based on what's happened. I'll go home and get away for a week or so ... and make the right decision."

If Favre needs surgery, the decision could impact whether he returns for a 19th NFL season. A long rehabilitation period could be a deterrent.

"I would love to see him back next year," said wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery. "Whatever he decides, I feel like he still has some great football left in him. He wasn't able to spend the offseason program with the team, so I definitely think that plays a role into it."

That, however, is part of the complexity in dealing with Favre these days. An extended decision-making period might result in Favre missing offseason workouts.

"I support him," wide receiver Laveranues Coles Shox Turbo V+ 5said. "We exchanged numbers. I know a lot of people always had a lot to say about our relationship. It has been great. We've never had any problem.

"We'll stay in touch during the offseason. I may even shoot over to the crib and we'll go hunting if we get a chance."

NPR to cut 7 percent of workers

NPR to cut 7 percent of workers WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. radio network National Public Radio will cut 7 percent of its workers and eliminate two shows because of budget shortfalls, the network said on Wednesday. Facing a $23 million shortfall, NPR will eliminate the shows "Day to Day" and "News & Notes" in March because they failed to attract "sufficient levels of audience or national underwriting necessary to sustain continued production under these tough financial circumstances," Dennis Haarsager, NPR's CEO and interim president, Air Jordan 13 wrote in an internal memo. Many of the job cuts will come from those two programs. "All our revenue sources are under pressure," wrote Haarsager in the memo. "All industries, including the financial, automotive, and media industries, historically our biggest underwriters, are cutting back significantly." NPR, which has a staff of 889, said it will cut 85 jobs, Air Jordan 13including 21 unfilled positions. "Travel and discretionary expenses have been cut across the organization," NPR said in a statement. (Reporting by Diane Bartz, editing by Anthony Boadle)

San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Shaun Hill threw for 285 yards with a pair of touchdowns as the San Francisco 49ers surprised the New York Jets, 24-14. San Francisco (5-8) has won two straight and three of its last four games. "I downplayed it all week," said Hill about playing against and beating Brett Favre. "I just shoved it away in the back of my mind. When I got in the locker room after the game, I was able to kind of take a step back. That was really neat to play against him and for our team to come with the win. Air Jordan 18 That is something I'll be able to tell the kids and grandkids way on down the road." Bryant Johnson caught six balls for 49 yards and a score, while Isaac Bruce had six grabs for 70 yards for the 49ers, who had their slim division title hopes come to an end aftercheap mabinogi gold Arizona defeated St. Louis on Sunday to clinch the NFC West. "It says a lot of our guys," said San Francisco coach Mike Singletary. "It says a lot of our coaches. It says a lot of what we're trying to do and statement that we're trying to make. We just have to go forth with the three games we have left just taking them one at a time and let the chips fall where they may." "The answers are in the room," said New York coach Eric Mangini. "The answers are within each person, and what we have to do is what we have always done, which is come back and work more effectively and be ready to come out and play our best football." New York is now in a three-waywarhammer cd key tie for first place in the AFC East after New England defeated Seattle and Miami beat Buffalo on Sunday. "I don't know if we've lost confidence," said Favre. "We've lost two games. Of course it feels like two games that we should've won but there are a lot of reasons why we didn't win the game. I don't sense desperation. We're still in decent shape. If we continue playing the way we're playing we won't be. We lost two games in a row and it's no different talking about the way if we won five in a row. It is what it is. Air Jordan 17 We've got to play better. Our confidence, I don't know how it will be tomorrow. We have a long trip back, but we need to continue to stick together and get back to the way we play." Thomas Jones rushed for 56 yards and a score and tied the Jets all-time record with 14 total touchdowns this year. With San Francisco holding a 14-7 lead after one halfAir Jordan 16 of play, the 49ers appeared to have a good drive going midway through the third period, but Shaun Hill's pass intended for Bruce was picked off by David Bowens at the Jets' 31 and returned to San Francisco's 45. New York capitalized four plays later, when Jones went over right tackle and sprinted for a 17-yard score to tie the contest. San Francisco, however, got a 32-yard effort from Joe Nedney early in the fourth to surge back in front 17-14. Johnson gave the 49ers some breathing room afterAir Jordan 15 hauling in a three-yard TD pass with 6:05 remaining. The hosts need 10 plays to go 51 yards and took 6:35 off the game clock. After both teams traded punts, the Jets, in desperation mode, had a modest drive going, but Favre's deep pass was picked off by Walt Harris at the 49ers seven- yard-line with 1:52 left. San Francisco went three-and-out and was forced to punt, but the Jets ran out of time when Favre was sacked to end the game. San Francisco opened the scoring with 2:16 remaining in the opening quarter. With the 49ers on the Jets seven-yard-line, Shaun Hill's pass to Jason Hill was fumbled and the one, Air Jordan 14 but a hustling Joe Staley fell on it in the end zone for the score. Favre then capped a nine-play, 61-yard drive when he ran around right end for a two-yard touchdown to tie things at 7-7 with 7:17 left in the second period. Rice urges India to foil repeat attack

Rice urges India to foil repeat attack

By James Lamont in New Delhi, Joe Leahy in Mumbai and,Farhan Bokhari, Pakistan Correspondent Published: December 4 2008 02:00 | Last updated: December 4 2008 02:00 Condoleezza Rice, US secretary of state, yesterday dofus jolpressed India to take urgent measures to foil repeat terrorist attacks, as New Delhi firmly pinned the blame for last week's strike on Mumbai on militants and their controllers from Pakistan. Ms Rice, speaking on a visit to New Delhi, said the priority for India and Pakistan was "to prevent another attack" after the devastating strike on India's financial capital that cost 172 lives. "What has to happen is there has to be a real Air Jordan 18sense of transparency, real sense of action and real sense of urgency because these are extremists who have the same intention and samerunescape power leveling goal and that is to terrorise and send a message to states around the world," she said. In spite of police assurances that only 10 militants took part in the military-style attack - nine were killed and a suspect was captured - there are concerns some may still be at large. Indian police yesterday said they had defused explosives left by militants last week at Mumbai's main railway station. Mohammad Ajmal Amir Kasab, the captured suspect, is alleged to have told investigators he was part of a group of 25 recruits given months of training in a camp of Lashkar-e-Taiba, the Pakistani militant group. Pranab Mukherjee, India's foreign minister, said there was "no doubt" the attackrunescape items was carried out by "individuals from Pakistan", whose controllers were in Pakistan. He said this was a view widely held by the inter-national community. Pleas for co-operation faltered when Asif Ali Zardari, Pakistan's president, said if captured, militants would face justice in Pakistan rather than extradition to India. "We would try them in our courts, we would try them in our land and we would sentence them," he told CNN, the TV network. Mr Zardari disputed India's claims that the Air Jordan 18suspected terrorist was a Pakistani national. He said those responsible for the attacks were "stateless actors" operating throughout the region. "[The Indians] are probably thinking of Pakistan's response in the same way that we handed over hundreds of people to the US since the war on terror began," said Hasan Askari Rizvi, a respected Pakistani scholar. "This is a different relationship." Since the attacks, India's government and security forces have faced harsh criticism for having inadequate emergency services and intelligence gathering in spite of previous Air Jordan 18bombings of the city in 1993 and 2006. *Pakistan killed up to 30 Islamist militants in an air strike and three soldiers and a civilian were killed in a suicide attack in the north-west near the Afghan border yesterday, officials said. The air raid on a militant hideout in Mohmand tribal region came hours after a suicide bomber struck a military convoy in nearby Shabqadar town.

All Is Bright for Jupiter, Venus

All Is Bright for Jupiter, Venus

By Blaine P. Friedlander Jr.

Special to The Washington Post

Sunday, November 30, 2008; Page C06 Unwrap a bounty of night-sky gifts this holiday season: visible planets, glorious conjunctions, a close-up full moon and a change of season. Jupiter and Venus begin December in conjunction at dusk in the southwestern sky. If the sky remains clear, the Jupiter-Venus conjunction, officially occurring tomorrow night, will be spectacular. Venus is the brighter of the two planets, and it remains high in the southwest throughout December, while the gaseous Jupiter descends the western horizon all month. Venus, ever effervescent, is visible atrunescape powerleveling negative fourth magnitude (ultra bright), and it is easily mistaken for a distant jetliner approaching Dulles International Airport with its landing lights on. Jupiter at negative second magnitude is bright enough to enjoy from the urban light-polluted sky. At month's end, Venus sets after 8 p.m., and Jupiter sets before 6 p.m. Tonight, notice that the sliver of a young moon is below Jupiter and Venus, while tomorrow night the crescent can be seen above the planetary duo. Young moons Air Jordan 13always appear briefly in the western sky at dusk and early evening. At the very end of December, the fleet Mercury (zero magnitude, or bright) joins with Jupiter at dusk in the southwest for another conjunction. The brighter Jupiter is to Mercury's left, and Venus is far above the fray. The full moon Dec. 12 will be at its closest (356,556 kilometers, or 221,554 miles) to Earth since 1993, and the full moon won't be this close again until 2016. Once a month the moon gets close to Earth at perigee, but sometimes the monthly lunar perigee coincides mabinogi moneywith the full moon. On Jan. 1, 2257, the full moon will be closer than this year's event -- at 356,371 kilometers, or 221,439 miles -- according to Belgian astronomer and mathematician Jean Meeus. Concerning this phenomenon, the radio program "Earth and Sky," by Deborah Byrd and Joel Block, provides excellent details on its Dec. 12 podcast, found at http://www.earthsky.org/skywatching. Some US formula makers say products melamine-free

Some US formula makers say products melamine-free By Susan Heavey WASHINGTON, Nov 26 (Reuters) - Several makers of infant formula sold in the United States defended their products on Wednesday, saying tests had not found the kidney-damaging chemical melamine in their products. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Tuesday it had found trace amounts of the industrial chemical in one sample of formula. Although the FDA said the low level posed no risk,Air Jordan 13 reports of the finding caused alarm among parents. "The FDA has confirmed with Mead Johnson that melamine was not found in any of our products they tested," said Pete Paradossi, spokesman for the Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) unit, which markets several types of Enfamil-branded formula. Other companies had no comment on the FDA's findings but said their mabinogi money own tests did not detect the chemical. Hain Celestial Group Inc (HAIN.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) said its tests found no melamine or a related by- product, cyanuric acid, in its Earth's Best Organic formula. Privately held PBM Nutritionals, which makes store-brand formula, said the FDA had not told the company of any finding of melamine in its formula products. "Our tests have not detected melamine," PBM spokesman Joe Shields said. Other U.S.-approved makers of milk-based baby formula include Abbott Nutrition (ABT.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and Nestle USA (NESN.VX: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz). runescape accountsNeither company returned e-mails and phone calls seeking comment. Another maker, Solus Products, could not be reached. On Tuesday, the FDA said it began using a more sensitive testing process to detect melamine after the chemical was found widely in formula in China. Thousands of Chinese children were sickened and several died. Food products made in China have come under fire in recent years for containing melamine, a chemical used in plastics and fertilizer that can make products appear to contain higher levels Air Jordan 14of protein and thus boost their value. Melamine can cause life-threatening kidney failure. FDA spokeswoman Judy Leon said on Tuesday the melamine finding in one sample of U.S. formula was not from direct contamination but likely resulted from the manufacturing process or product packaging. She declined to tell Reuters which brand contained the chemical. Other media outlets reported melamine or cyanuric acid had beenAir Jordan 15 found in one Mead Johnson product and one Nestle product. "We have received thousands of calls from moms asking for clarification and information," Mead Johnson's Paradossi said. Connecticut Democratic Rep. Rosa DeLauro said independent science mustrunescape accounts verify there is no risk for infants. "The FDA should work with industry immediately on an action plan that eliminates melamine from the manufacturing process. This must happen in days not weeks," she said. Consumer groups urged companies and the FDA to make their formula findings public. "FDA needs to do much more to protect our families, and they shouldAir Jordan 13 start by being honest with the American public," National Research Center for Women & Families President Diana Zuckerman said. The FDA did not respond to calls or e-mails seeking comment. (Additional reporting by Lisa Baertlein in Los Angeles; Editing by Peter Cooney)

Auto bailout would drive deficit too high, McGuinty warns

KEITH LESLIE The Canadian Press November 22, 2008 at 6:05 PM EST TORONTO — As governments in Canada and the United States consider rescue packages for the struggling auto industry, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty warned Saturday that giving taxpayers' money to support the sector could drive the province's deficit into dangerous territory. Ontario already had to revise its budget forecasts warhammer power levelingfor this year to eliminate an expected surplus and instead post a $500-million deficit. With mayors from 22 Ontario communities pressing the province to help save the industry, auto dealers begging for help and the auto makers looking for cash, Mr. Jordan 13McGuinty said the demands on his government are only increasing as the economic times get worse. “The auto sector demand alone could cause our deficit to dramatically balloon,” Mr. McGuinty said after a speech to a Liberal policy conference. “When it comes to the deficit, some people say ‘Well, what difference does it make?' Well, it makes a big difference. If we get caught with a major structural deficit, it becomes difficult if not impossible to get out of it.” Prime Minister Stephen Harper warned about the dangers buy runescape gpof deficit financing at the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation summit in Lima, Peru on Saturday, saying it's something Canada has had “bad experiences” with. “We were once badly in a long-term structural deficit position. Federally, 27 straight deficits threatened the very stability of our economy,” said Mr. Harper. “We worked long and hard to get out of it and to educate the public as to why it was bad.” With more than 400,000 Ontario jobs at stake, Mr. McGuinty spoke about the “economic and social value” of the auto sector, making it clear the province intends to offer financial aid, even Jordan 14if it means adding more red ink to the books. “We've got to balance public support and what that means in terms of costs and the absence of support – the failure of the industry – and what that means in terms of costs,” he told reporters. “It makes for a real challenge for us.” Analysts warned Friday that General Motors could soon dofus itemsbe forced to seek bankruptcy protection if a U.S. government bailout package isn't worked out soon, saying the auto giant could run out of cash before January. Federal Industry Minister Tony Clement and Ontario Economic Development Minister Michael Bryant's visits to Detroit and Washington this week helped give a clearer picture of the situation the auto makers face in the United States, Mr. McGuinty said. “It was an opportunity for them to get a sense – even if they didn't get Jordan 15all the meetings that would have liked – they got a feeling for how things are unfolding there, which is very helpful to us.” Mr. McGuinty cautioned the auto companies that provincial support would not be automatic, and said taxpayers want to know the companies and unions have a strategy to get out of the current mess. “I think Ontarians are bringing both goodwill and a healthy buy runescape itemsskepticism to the table,” he said. “But they are going to have to demonstrate to us that they are prepared to do what it takes. Let's see some specific plans. Let's get some reliable assurances things are going to get better.” However, Mr. McGuinty said taxpayers and governments also have to be realistic in demanding that car makers to switch to smaller, more fuel efficient cars and trucks, noting Jordan 16that five out of the top ten selling vehicles in Canada are trucks and mini-vans. “We buy a lot of trucks and big vehicles, and we need to be honest about the demands we place on the auto sector,” he said. “If we want them to produce Jordan 17 more fuel efficient vehicles, I think we have to buy more fuel efficient vehicles.”

Computer virus causes havoc at London hospitals

By Claudine Beaumont Last Updated: 12:05PM GMT 19 Nov 2008 The bug struck IT systems at St Bartholomew's, warhammer time cart The Royal London and the London Chest Hospital on Monday. Staff resorted to a manual system of records keeping and admission tracking, meaning that Accident and Emergency departments were open only to walk-in patients, and ambulances were diverted to neighbouring hospitals to ensure the health of critically ill patients was not compromised as a result of the slower manual system in place. A spokesperson for the NHS trust that covers all three of the affected hospitals said that operating theatres and outpatients departments had "remained operational" throughout the incident. The cause of the computer failure is thought to be the Mytob virus, which affects Windows operating systems and is spread by email. The rogue emails contain an attachment, known as an executable file, that once opened, will infect the runescape power levelingcomputer network. Mytob is a "Trojan" virus, because it installs the executable file on the computer in order to give hackers an open channel through which to gain control of the machine. The Mytob virus was first identified in 2005, and most anti-virus software protects against it. Attempts buy IT workers to fix the problem overnight on Air Jordan 13 Air Jordan 14 Air Jordan 15 Air Jordan 16 Air Jordan 17 Air Jordan 18Monday failed, and a specialist team of engineers has been bought in to get computer systems back online.
